Selection process: Message us about your relevant experience, why you’d like to volunteer with us & the dates you would be available
There is no one specific type of person we are looking for. The only thing volunteers need to have is a willingness to devote themselves to our projects and an openness to the simple rural life that we live.
There is a lot you can learn about culture, language, politics, ethnicity, farming, construction and the grass root development process with us. Volunteers can get involved in:
- Animal and plant agriculture.
- Construction or management depending upon skills and experience.
We prefer to match volunteer experience and desires with our needs and resources during their time.
Hours & Roster
- Depending on the job, we generally work 6 hours per day (11am to 5pm).
Sleeping: Volunteers stay in a traditional Nepalese houses. The rooms have their own entrances and are a 10 minute walk from the school. They come furnished with a bed and mosquito net. There's also a little store nearby that sells basic things.
Linen & Laundry: We provide basic linen. There is a local laundry facility.
Eating: We eat pretty simply here. Meals are cooked 3 times per day and consist of vegetable curry and rice. We try to have meat a few times per week.
Transport: Buses from Kathmandu bound for Pokhara will get you to the town of Damauli (4.5 hours from Kathmandu). From there is a bus (#163) departing around 3pm that will get you to the school.
Nepal is going through difficult times due to the recent earthquake. We are part of the rehabilitation program to help the children who have suffered the most. Maya Universe is the first and only chain of free private schools in Nepal. Instead of paying fees, the parents of the students who study in our schools volunteer for two days of every month. In other words, people can pay us with time instead of money for our services. Our 'Maya' model has been very popular though less than five years old. We are running three schools and plans to build more are on the way. You can take part in a grassroots development process at its early years. Apart from voluntourism, Maya has its own animal, vegetable and fruit farms. We also make handmade bracelets and notebooks and provide workshops to high school kids from Kathmandu city to learn about Nepal. Maya Universe provides a safe shelter despite the recent earthquake damage. We are building basic infrastructure to host children from Gorkha, which was the epicenter of the earthquake.
